Challenging the authenticity of a Hadith in Bukhari!

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is this hadith saheeh considering its chains?

This is what i read about it:

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk (clothes), the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful.’

Although this hadith is in Sahih Al-Bukhari, its chain of transmission is not connected to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing! s be upon him) and this invalidates its authenticity.

Ibn Hazm rejects it for that very reason.

Answer

Firstly, the general masses are strongly discouraged from pursuing or even merely reading such academic arguments. The lay man is not equipped to actually comprehend such discussions, and the subsequent answers to such baseless objections!

We therefore seldom attend to such queries, unless we deem it suitable for a response, or if the submitter states his academic qualification.

Secondly, Ibn Hazam (rahimahullah) is known in the academic circles for his isolated views, in which he opposes the mainstream Scholars. His writings should be avoided at all costs by the unqualified reader. Curiosity doesn’t just kill cats…

Lastly, The Hadith Masters have refuted Ibn Hazam’s rejection of this Hadith and have ruled this Hadith as authentic. That is the final word on this Hadith.

Hereunder are a few quotations from the senior Hadith Scholars:

1. Ibn Salah (rahimahullah) writes:

‘No attention should be paid to what Ibn Hazam’s rejection of this Hadith…

… This Hadith is actually authentic (sahih) with a continuous chain that fulfills the criteria of authenticity.’

(Muqaddimah Ibnus Salah, & Fathul Bari, Hadith: 5590)

2. Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) writes that Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) deemed this Hadith as acceptable.

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 5590)

3. This Hadith has also been declared authentic (sahih) by Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah)

(Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 6754)

4. ‘Allamah ‘Ayni (rahimahullah) writes in his commentary on Sahih Bukhari:

‘This Hadith is authentic (sahih)…

…Ibn Hazam has erred in [rejecting] this [Hadith].’

(‘Umdatul Qari, Hadith: 5590)
