The curse of a husband who has an evil wife

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I was reading an article and there was one Hadith which said to the effect that:

Allah does not accept three people’s duas, first being the one that has an evil wife and he doesn’t divorce her.

And I don’t remember the other two.

The article also gave references I don’t recall that either. Please inform me of the authenticity of this Hadith. Please give me the whole Hadith and where to find it.

Answer

Sayyiduna Abu Musa (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘There are three people who call out to Allah, but their du’a is not accepted;

1. A man who does not divorce his wife, despite her evil character,

2. A man who is owed money, but didn’t call witnesses to attest to the loan,

3. And a man who hands his wealth to a reckless person, whereas Allah Ta’ala said:

‘And do not give your wealth to the incompetent/reckless ones’

(Mustadrak Hakim, vol.2 pg.302 & Sharh Mushkilil Athar of Tahawi, Hadith: 2530. Also see Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 17429)

Imam Hakim, as well as ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahumallah) have classified the chain of this Hadith as authentic (sahih).

Imam Tahawi (rahimahullah) has also approved this Hadith.

The actual meaning of this Hadith is that only the du’as of these persons in regard to their mentioned predicament will not be accepted. Since they have refused to do what was required of them in each of their situations…

Therefore, if the husband curses such a wife, it would not be accepted by Allah.

(Sharh Mushkilil Athar of Tahawi, Hadith:2530 & Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 3554)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
