The importance of being cautious with one’s words

Please provide the reference for this Hadith:

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“A slave of Allah might say something without realising its seriousness, which causes him to slip into Jahannam further than the distance between the east and the west”

Answer

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded these words on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded it with slight variation in the wording.

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2988 and Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6477)

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) states that this Hadith encourages one to protect his tongue. A person should ponder and reflect before speaking. If there is some benefit then he should speak else remain silent.

(Al Minhaj of ‘Allamah Nawawi, Hadith: 7407)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
