Baby name

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Asalaamalaikum

One of my friend have a daughter so he named her as Mahira..After couple of days of birth some issue happened so he decided to change this name and put as Zainab but his parents objected to it..He tried many times but they don’t agree. He tried Hafsa as well but this name is present in family and also parents don’t agree..

Many people have difficulty in pronunciation of Mahira as they call as Mahera..so he was deciding to change but couldn’t find names as there are few selected names which are not liked in family..

1. Can you share few good names?
2. Also if parents don’t agree should he still go ahead and change it to zainab?

Answer

Wa ʿAlaykumus Salām Wa Raḥmatullāhī Wa Barakātuh

Kindly refer to Fatwaa Ref-No#: 3312

There is no need to change the name of the child since the name ‘Māhirah’ is permissible to keep as a name and has no bad meanings attached to it.

If there is difficulty and issues related to the pronunciation of the name, then the father should call out the name correctly and, in that way, it may serve as a means of educating others in this regard. Also, the child will then grow up saying her name correctly which in turn will enable others, whom she meets, to say her name correctly.
