Baby girl name

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

AoA,

I want to name my newborn baby girl “Dua”. She is born on Thursday 13 June 2019. Is this name is acceptable as a Muslim name? and any effect the name has on a child? What about the names Ayan and Maryam?

Thanks

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

The name of a person has an impact on his personality and conduct.  When choosing a name, it is always recommended to name a child after one of our pious predecessors, so that the child can get the noble qualities of the one who she is named after.

Maryam (alayha as Salam) was the mother of ‘Isa (alayhi as Salam). There were also many Sahabias (companions of the Prophet) named Maryam.

We suggest that you name your daughter Maryam.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best

Wassalaam,

Ismail Moosa (Mufti)
