Niyyat for Acts of Worship

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Assalamu alaykum!

My question is:- Must we use the word “intention” when forming intention in the heart for acts of worship?

e.g ‘i intend to pray the fard of zuhr’ can we form it in our heart by ‘i want to pray the fard of zuhr’

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salām wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

It is not necessary to use the words ‘intention’, ‘Niyyat’ and ‘want’, or any similar words in one’s mind and heart when intending to carry out an act of worship.

Merely being aware and knowing in one’s heart and mind that an act of worship is to be carried out, will be sufficient.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best

Wassalaam,

Ismail Moosa (Mufti)
