Ribaat in South Africa

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

During this time, while our men folk go out to protect the community, do they fall into the same category as a raabit or is that only for jihad.
(I’m not sure how to correctly translate raabit/ribaat)

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Guarding a community and protecting a neighborhood from an eminent attack is a great Sunnah.

When there was fear of an enemy attacking Madina, the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would himself patrol the streets. There are numerous narrations which proves how the companions too would remain at night to protect Madina.

Those who are patrolling and protecting their communities will get all the rewards of Ribaat mentioned in the noble Ahadith.

Ribaat refers to the action of guarding, and the one guarding is called a Muraabit. Those patrolling will be regarded as Murabiteen.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best

Wassalaam,
