I have an 8 year old son and have been trying to conceive for the last 7 years. I was diagnosed with PCOS a few years ago which means that the menstrual cycle is irregular and body is not always ovulating. During ramadhaan, I started bleeding and assumed this to be my menstrual period. However after 10 days of abnormally heavy bleeding I visited the hospital and was told that in fact I had a miscarriage. The doctors were unable to tell me the length of pregnancy at time of miscarriage. From an Islamic view, is this a valid miscarriage as I do not know if any parts were formed or not?

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Respected sister in Islam,
You certainly have been through a challenging situation. Miscarriages can also be a bounty from Allah Ta’ala.
It is stated in a Hadith:
عن النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم قال (والذي نفسي بيده إن السقط ليجر أمه بسرره إلى الجنة إذا احتسبته)
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah upon him, said, “By the One in Whose hands is my soul, the miscarried fetus will drag his mother to paradise by his [umbilical] cord if she was patient [with the miscarriage], hoping to be rewarded.”)Ibn Majah,1609 (
In principle, if a miscarriage takes place before the forming of the limbs, then the bleeding after the miscarriage will be considered as menses. 1
If the miscarriage took place after the limbs were formed, the bleeding would be regarded as Nifaas (postnatal bleeding).2
In the case where it is unknown whether the limbs were formed or not, nor can the length of the pregnancy be determined, the first ten days after the miscarriage would be regarded as Haidh( menses). Thereafter make a compulsory Ghusl. The bleeding that continues will be regarded as Istihada(dysfunctional uterine bleeding). The ruling of Istihada is a woman should renew her Wudhu before every Fardh Salaah. She will also have to keep obligatory fasts. 3،4،5،6) (
And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
