What Is the Classifcation of the Hadith Regarding Four People Whose Duas Will Not Be Accepted in Ramadan?

Question:

I have two questions.

1) I have heard some scholars state that there are four people who will not be forgiven or whose dua will not be accepted in Ramadan – especially on Layla – tul Qadr. Have you come across a hadith which mentions this – as one scholar has said the hadith mentioning this was weak.

2) If someone is not speaking to relatives/family members whilst fasting does this mean they lose the reward for their fast? – this is based on the authentic hadith stating if an individual does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.

I look forward to your reply, may Allah bless you all and reward you for your efforts.

Answer to Question 1

The part of the Hadith which you are referring to is only a very small portion of a much longer Hadith. There are a few variations of the Hadith. However, the chain of the Hadith has been deemed weak due to some of the narrators in the chain being unknown.

The part of the Hadith which you have asked about is as follows,

“Allāh Ta’ālā looked at them on this night and pardoned them except for four. We asked, “O Messenger of Allāh, who are they?” He ﷺ said, “(they are) a man addicted to wine, (one who) disobeys his parents, (one who) severs the ties of kinship and (those who) quarrel.” (Shu’bul Imān of Imām Baihaqi; Hadith 3695) [1]

Answer to Question 2

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever does not leave false speech, and acting according to it, then Allah is not in any need of him leaving his food and his drink.” [Sunan At-Tirmizi; Hadith 707, 2498, Sahih Al-Bukhari; Hadith 1903, 6057, Sunan Ibn Majah; Hadith 1689, Sunan Abi Dawood; Hadith 2362]

This Hadith lays the importance of acting righteously and avoiding ill and futile speech. These are things that we should avoid always, but at times we tend to forget and let the shaytaan get the better of us. But, when we are fasting, we are actively engaged in a form of worship throughout the day, so our consciousness of sins should be greater when fasting than when we are not. Thus, the extra emphasis on avoiding sins while fasting.

Also, this does not mean that one should not fast. The necessity of fasting remains. However, the share of rewards we will potentially get will be diminished by sin.

Not speaking to relatives is not a sin per se. At times, many weeks, months or even years could go by without talking to somebody. But that does not infer that there is a grudge between yourselves which is standing as a barrier. Perhaps you have not had time to stay in contact. There is no sin in this. However, if there is some wrongdoing on either side, now, to remain distant at any time, either while fasting or otherwise would be a sin. The best of the two is the one who reconciles, even when he is not in the wrong.

As the Prophet ﷺ has said, “It is not lawful for a man to desert his brother Muslim for more than three nights. (It is unlawful for them that) when they meet, one of them turns his face away from the other, and the other turns his face from the former, and the better of the two will be the one who greets the other first.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari; Hadith 6077] [3]

Only Allah knows best.
