Virtues of Miswaak

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

The Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam has laid down great importance on the use of the miswaak. The records of our Prophet Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam ahadith indicate that the miswaak was the Sunnah of all the Prophets of Allah.

Saaiduna Abu Ayub Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said; “Four things are amongst the practice of the Prophet: Circumcision, application of perfume, miswaak and marriage.” (Sunan Tirmizi P.206 V.1)

Saaiduna Ibn Umar Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said, “Make a regular practice of the miswaak, for verily, it is healthy for the mouth and it is a pleasure for the Creator.” (Sahih Bukhari)

The companions regarded the miswaak in a very serious light and regarded it as a practice of supreme holiness.

Saaiduna Ibn Abbas and Saaiduna Ali Radiallahu Anhuma said: “Regard the miswaak as an obligation on you and not be neglectful of it. Be constant in using it as in it lies the pleasure of Allah, The Merciful, and in it is greater reward for Salah.” (Sharah Ihya Ul Uloom)

Saaiduna Hassan Bin Attiyah has said,  “Miswaak is half of Imaan and wudhu is half of Imaan.” (Ibid)
