Is it permissible to erect a gravestone?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Is it permissible to erect a gravestone?

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

Graves should be simple and without any fancy or extravagant decoration. It is because of this reason it is considered impermissible to strengthen the graves by using cement or with baked bricks.   (Raddul Muhtar p.144 v.3)

With regards to your question, it is permissible to place headstones on graves for identification purposes only. Furthermore, it is not permissible to write verses of the Holy Qur’an on the headstones of graves due to the fear of it being disrespected.
