Question:

Assalamu’alaykum.

So, I am currently pregnant and I have been told not to hold anything sharp or tie a knot, etc., during the lunar eclipse may I add.

Is this superstitious or can this really have an effect on the mother and the unborn baby?

Jazak Allah Khair

Answer:

There are numerous customs and cultures that tend to promote and recognize superstitions. Unfortunately, many of those incorrect superstitions may be found in Muslim families, thus leading people to assume these superstitions are found within the teachings of Islam. However, Islam is a religion-free of any superstition. Keeping this in mind, it is the responsibility of a Muslim to eradicate these customs and superstitions from their lives completely. According to the Hadith of the Prophet (S.A.W), authentically reported in Sahih Al-Bukhari those people who will enter paradise without accountability refrain from such actions and beliefs. He (S.A.W) said, when defining those blessed individuals “they are those who do not deal in prohibited incantations nor acts of superstition, rather they entrust their affairs to their Lord.”

This culture of superstitions was found in the ancient times of the Arabs and they would use birds to make decisions, considering this to be a method of decision-making. If they intended to do an action and noticed the bird fly to the right they would follow through with the action assuming it to be blessed. On the other hand, if it flew to the left they would consider it an evil omen and abandon the action immediately. This has been clearly rejected by the Prophet (S.A.W) wherein He said, “There is no contagiousness or superstition in Islam.” Finally, there is no concept of tying a knot or refraining from holding something sharp during the lunar eclipse. There is absolutely no basis for this and must be forgone.
