Question

Salaam. I need a quick answer. Can a person make an intention before dahwatul Kubra for a qadha fast? Or is tabyeet necessary?

Answer:

The obligatory fasts fall into two types:

1- The obligatory fast associated with a specified time – such as the fast of Ramadan – these fasts can have their intention formed the previous night, until the Islamic midday (dahwatul kubra- midpoint between sunrise and sunset), although making the intention before fajr is better.

2- The obligatory fast not associated with a specified time – such as the qadaa fast of Ramadan or kaffarah – these fasts need to have an intention formed from the previous night. This is because they are non-specific to a certain time and therefore they must be specified before being started.

Therefore, in order for you to fast a qadha fast, it would require that you make intention from the previous night before fajr commences.[1]
