Three Talaqs over a period of three years!

Answered by: Moulana Tahsin Alam

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

Gradually our relations turned problematic and in September 2014.  I had given the first Divorce to my wife, it was verbal and written as well.  After one month dispute resolved and we started living together.

In 2015 again our relations got problematic and I had given First Divorce again. In May 2016 I had given her second divorce. After that divorce, she left my home and till this time she is living at her own home.

I have given her three divorces for three years, 2014, 2015 and 2016. After the second divorce (which may be thirds in an actual sense) we both got separated and living separated.

I want to confirm do I need to give her third divorce now or my divorce has completed.

You have given three talaqs (divorces) over the span of three years to your now ex-wife; a man only has three divorces to give to his wife before she becomes mugal’lazah (irrevocably haram upon you until she marries another man and has intercourse).

You do not have to issue the third divorce since you have already done so in 2016. Therefore the marriage would have ended after her iddah (waiting period) during the same year.
