Question:

Is clapping (as a way of applauding) allowed in Islam

Answer:

According to the majority of scholars, it is disliked to clap and should be avoided, as it may appear to be an imitation of the disbelievers who would worship by clapping their hands.

Allah Ta’ala said: “And their worship at the (holy) House is nought but whistling and handclapping.”(8:35).

However, if it is done casually, for a valid reason such as grabbing someone’s attention, then it will not be impermissible.

Only Allah knows best.
