Is keeping birds in cages permissible in Islam?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Is it permissible to keep birds in cage in Islam? Will they curse us for keeping them in prison?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

(Fatwa: 751/664/D=11/1437)

It is lawful to keep the birds in the cage for fondness and amusement but the condition is that they are fed timely and fully. But if it is for play such as pigeon betting then it is unlawful. However, if one makes them fly on the roof etc to trouble people then it is haram.

The birds which are not supplied with sufficient food and water or are tortured, they shall curse their masters, as a camel complained to the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, about its owner.

وأما للاستئناس فمباح قال في المجتبى رامزا لا باس بحبس الطيور والدجاج في بيته ولكن يعلفها وهو خير من إرسالها فى الكل (الشامى 5/284 رشيديه)

Allah knows Best!
