Is the money halal which is acquired through a job gained by lying?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by AskOurImam.com

As-Salamu Alaykum.

There are numerous I.T training classes where the information is taught but eventually jobs are placed based on fake resumes. Basically students will take an 8 week course in the particular technology and afterwards the school rigorously helps the student land a job. There have been a number of successful students that completed the course and landed pretty well paid positions in these fields.

The question is in regards to what is mentioned to the prospecting employer in the students resume. On the students resume it is mentioned that the students has “5/6” years of experience with another company in the same field of work. One may ask how that is possible. What the institute has set up are recruiters that know what to say when asked. So for example, if the student`s resume says he worked for “Boeing” for 5 years, the prospective employer will not contact Boeing but a recruiter who supposedly recruited for the Boeing job.

One thing is definite is that the student must definitely know his stuff and must concentrate and complete all coursework. The other thing is that if the student decides to go his own way with his own resume then it is difficult to get a job because no help from the institute is provided.

Is this practice correct of mentioning 5/6 years of experience?

Additionally, if it is incorrect and if someone has taken up a job using this method is that money Halal?

Please provide some sound knowledge so this can be conveyed to my friends and colleagues who choose this path.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is a major sin to lie and present inaccurate information to succeed for a job. [1] Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) states:

من غشّ فليس منّا

Translation: Whoever deceives, he is not from amongst us[2].

While, the individual will be sinful for lying; the income of the job will be halal since he is offering a valid service and is receiving payment in return for that service.[3]
