Is it permissible to consume balsamic vinegar?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by AskOurImam.com

As Salamu Alaikum

I refer to your Fatwa number 15225, answered on 20th May, 2007. You have mentioned that it is permissible to consume balsamic vinegar as long as effect of alcohol is not present. Balsamic vinegar is one of the main ingredient is wine vinegar which is made out of grapes. It is not ethanol.

If we allowed to consume balsamic vinegar then why can`t we use wine in cooking? If we apply same principle in cooking and make it 100% sure that alcohol effect is not present. The alcohol will burn off anyway.

Could you please explain this in detail? I have been encouraging people here in Aukland to avoid anything mixed with alcohol (wine, brandy, beer) but the Fatwa I am referring to tells me and others something else.

Please explain. May Allah reward you for this. Thank you

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We have reviewed our Fatwa no. 15225 issued on 20th May, 2007. We maintain the same view that balsamic vinegar is permissible if there are no effects of alcohol. This is clearly supported by juridical texts of our esteemed Jurists (Fuqaha).[1]

You are correct to stop the people from consuming anything having alcohol like wine, brandy etc.

However, it is incorrect to analogise vinegar on wine and brandy as the latter are intoxicants while vinegar is not.

The analogy of cooking with wine is also incorrect. At the time of cooking, wine is an intoxicant and prohibited[2]. In vinegar, the prohibited content is eliminated before use.

It is not appropriate for a non-scholar (Alim or Mufti) to pass rulings of shari`ah, as they do not have the qualification to distinguish a principle issue from an emotional issue, and that may lead to making Halaal to Haraam and vice versa.
