Beatboxing

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: Is beatboxing permissible in nazms?

A: According to Quran and Sunnah it is clear that beatboxing is totally haraam.

PROOF FROM QURAN
In Surah Anfaal (Chapter 8), verse 35, Almighty Allah condemns the practice of the Meccan Kuffar, when making tawaaf of the Holy Ka’aba, of whistling and clapping hands. In the Tafseer of Qurtubi and others it is stated that this whistling was done by placing the fingers in the mouth to create a shrill, melodious sound. The Commentators then go on to rule that such whistling is haraam. This is proof that creating a sound with the mouth to give off a melody is haraam.

PROOF FROM HADITH
Rasoolullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) is reported to have said: “I have been prohibited from two foolish, evil ‘voices’ (or sounds): One is the voice of melody at the time of singing, which is the melody of Shaytaan… (Narrated by Tirmizhi, and he says the hadith is sound and authentic).

This hadith clearly prohibits vocal percussion or the creating of musical sounds with the voice. The word used in the hadith is ‘saut’, which means a voice. In the above statement there is no reference to musical instruments. The prohibition is purely of using the voice to make melodious sounds when singing. The reason for the prohibition in this hadith is that the sounds made with the voice resemble that of musical instruments. Music is haraam, so any sound that is deliberately created to resemble music will also be haraam

Beatboxing was invented by non Muslims specifically for the music industry. It was perfected by singers and adapted for musicals and songs. This is another factor that makes it forbidden, the imitation of  kuffar in their cultural practices, and in entertainment and merry-making.
