Zakaat on Wife’s Gold

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: I received gold in my marriage which belongs to my wife. I don’t have any other zakatable income, instead I have loans owed by me. Do I have to pay zakat?

A: If the gold belongs to your wife then you don’t need to pay zakaat on it. She will have to pay her own zakaat. she must get the value of the gold and pay two and a half percent of that value. If she does not have all the money to pay zakaat, she can pay little at a time, for example, a small amount every month.
