I want to know about the Sunnah when there is an eclipse.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I want to know about the Sunnah when there is an eclipse. I heard that Nabi S.A.W used to offer nafl salat at that time. My question is that my wife is pregnant by 4 months. So is there any amal for pregnant women to do/not do at the time of eclipse?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

A solar eclipse took place during the golden era of the messenger of Allah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam). Consider the following hadeeth:

Mughira bin Shu`ba (Radiallahu Anhu) narrates: “The sun eclipsed in the lifetime of Allah’s Messenger (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) on the day when (his son) Ibrahim (Radyallahu Anhu) died. So the people said that the sun had eclipsed because of the death of Ibrahim (Radyallahu Anhu).  Allah’s Messenger (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life (i.e. birth) of someone. When you see the eclipse pray and invoke Allah.” (Sahih al-Bukhari-1043)

When a solar or lunar eclipse takes place,

1) It should be regarded as a manifestation of Allah Taalas power.

2) One should ponder upon the Greatness and the Majesty of Allah Taala.

3) Fear Qiyaamah (the Day of Judgement) being imminent and make Tauba (repent for ones sins).

4) One should fear the anger and wrath of Allah Taala.

Consider the following haith:

Abu Musa (Radiallahu Anhu) narrates: The sun eclipsed during the time of the Messenger of Allah (). He stood in great anxiety fearing that it might be the Doomsday, till he came to the mosque. He stood up to pray with prolonged qiyam, ruku’, and prostration which I never saw him doing in prayer; and then he said: These are the signs which Allah sends, not on account of the death of anyone or life of any one, but Allah sends them to frighten thereby His servants. So when you see any such thing, hasten to remember Him, supplicate Him and beg pardon from Him, and in the narration transmitted by Ibn ‘Ala the words are:” The sun eclipsed”.”” He frightens His servants.” (Muslim-912)

Masaa-il pertaining to Salaatul Kusoof (Salaah of Solar eclipse) [1]

1)     It is Sunnah to perform Salaatul Kusoof.[2]

2)     It should be performed in Jamaah (in congregation).[3]

3)     The Qiraat in Salaatul Kusoof may be recited audibly (Jaharan).[4]

4)     Salaatul Kusoof may be performed in two rakaats or four rakaats, with one salaam or two salaams.[5]

5)     One should engage in Ibaadah throughout the eclipse by either performing lengthy Salaah with long Ruku and Sajdah, or by making Dua, or by both Salaah and Dua.[6]

6)     In Salaatul Kusoof one should recite long Surahs wherein Allah Taala describes the Day of Qiyaamah.[7]

Masaa-il pertaining to Salaatul Khusoof (Salaah of Lunar eclipse)

The masail of khusoof are similar to those of kusoof except:

1)     It is Mustahab (desirable) to perform Salaatul Khusoof.[8]

2)     Salaatul Khusoof is performed individually.[9]

A woman pregnant or not may also perform the Salaah individually.
