Can you please shed some light on dawah vs ibadah?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Can you please shed some light on dawah vs ibadat? I heard dawah is the mother of all deeds and Allah SWT might accept the compromise in one’s ibadat but not when it comes to dawah. Please help me in understanding if dawah is the top deed in our deen and if it has preference over ibadah.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

‘Ibadah (worship) and dawah (inviting towards Allah) go hand in hand. The purpose of our creation is to worship Allah, and worship has various forms. There is no compromise in obligatory ‘ibadah and a person has to discharge it.

Just as praying salah is an obligation and constitutes ‘ibadah, likewise, dawah is also an obligation and part of ‘ibadah. However, the extent of one’s responsibility in giving dawah varies based on one’s influence, authority and knowledge: “Everyone of you is a shepherd and everyone of you will be asked about his flock.”

Based on the above hadith, all those people who are under one’s care or sphere of influence then become part of that person’s individual obligation. If he falls short in his obligations towards them then he will be held accountable just as he will be held accountable for being negligent in other aspects of ‘ibadah such as salah.

As for the collective responsibility of the ummah to make dawah, a Muslim will be greatly rewarded for inviting to Islam and doing tabligh among the Muslims beyond those people who are not under his care. It goes without saying that in these latter times there is a growing need for greater numbers of people to participate and take on this shared responsibility. [i] [ii] [iii]
