I have heard that the islamic ruling on music is that it is forbidden/haraam? could you please assure me of this and as to where this is indicated in the Quran/Sunnah/Hadiths

Also is all forms of music haraam? even if there is no vulgarity in the content of the song? is it the singing or the playing of musical instruments which is impermissible??
