Is entertainment allowed in islam? juggling, jokes, magic tricks and much more

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

There are many types of entertainment. This includes juggling, jokes, magic tricks and much more. Can you refer to any hadith if possible.

Answer

Imam Zuhri (RA) reports that Rasulullah (Assalaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Barakaatuhu) said, “Relax the mind time and again.” (al-Maraaseel of Imaam Abu Dawud pg.11; al-Risalah)

Sayyiduna Aliy (Radhiallaahu Anhu) has said, “Relax the minds for they also become tired.” (Faydhul Qadeer vol.4 pg.54; Hadith4484)

Sayyiduna Abud-Dardaa (Radhiallaahu Anhu) is reported to have said, “Verily, I relax my mind with a bit of entertainment so that it may refreshen up for the truth.” (Ibid; also refer to Kashful-Khifaa vol.1 pg.384; Hadith1398)

These narrations imply the permissibility of entertainment, however, the nature of the entertainment should not exceed the bounds of the Shari’ah, i.e. it should not entail lies, deception, music, dancing, etc.
