I wanted to find out I met a boy 1and a half years ago and want to make nikaah,my parents are against it because he’s sunni and I’m tabligh however he’s parents are accepting me. I’m hanafi iis it permissible for me to marry without their consent to avoid sin as we see 1 another almost everyday,I stay away from home with family due to studies. And also does the marriage have to be consummated for it yo be valid?

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Sister in Islam,
Your want to stay away from sin and to protect yourself from zina is commendable. Islam instructs its followers to be moral and modest and thus prohibits the free mixing and intermingling of non-mahram men and women. Therefore, we advise you to terminate your relationship with the boy in reference.
You mentioned that your parents are against you marrying the boy in reference. Your parents most definitely have a lot of love for you and would want what is best for you in life as they have brought you up and are supporting you. It will be inappropriate for you to go against their wishes.
In principle, although the Nikah with the boy in reference will be permissible, we however highly discourage the Nikah due to the following reasons:
- Your parents are against you marrying him. This could have a major impact on your marriage in the long run.
- He is sunni (barelwi) and the differences of beliefs between the two of you could affect your compatibility and also have an impact on your children’s beliefs.
- Secret Nikahs go against the spirit of Nikah. Nikah makes lawful numerous things that were prohibited before marriage. If people are unaware of the fact that a couple is married, they will have bad thoughts about them and of their offspring which will lead both them and yourself into sin.
We advise you to choose a more compatible partner that shares the same beliefs (aqida) that you have as this will create a balance, harmony and peace in your life.
And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
