Making Beard Neat

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: As a Muslim male from West Indies my beard is very scruffy and messy. My job requires me to be smart, yet my beard grows uneven and sticks out and makes it look like I don’t care. Is there any way that it could be ok just to make it tidy while not cutting it completely? I see many imams etc with beards that look very smart. I know it doesn’t grow that way.

A: You may trim on the cheeks and the throat. The minimum length of the beard is one fist length all round. So if there is any portion of the beard that has exceeded a fist length, that portion may be trimmed to a fist length and not the portion that is shorter. It will take a bit of time but eventually it will even out.
