Praying Salaah in a sitting position while travelling by train

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Q. While travelling by train, can I offer the namaz in a sitting position by sitting on the seat itself as there is not so much space and if I offer namaz while standing it would create a problem for others and also hinder their free movement in the train?

A. First of all, you should try your best to offer your Salaah in the standing position. If this is not possible, then you will be allowed to sit and perform Salaah. However, in this case, the sitting should not be done on the seat. If you do this, it means that you will be performing Salaah with signs for the Ruku and Sajdah and this is not permissible for a person who can do the actual postures of ruku and Sajda. Hence, you should sit in the Tashahud posture and do the ruku and Sajda properly. (Kitabul Fatawa vol.2 pg. 477).

And Allah knows best.
