Is spiritual music with instruments allowed?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by SunniPath Answer Service Team

It is my understanding that in Islam it is prohibited to listen to music, with any musical instruments except the tambourine and singing. What about music about Allah (swt) and other Islamic songs?  For example, Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), is his music allowed or not? Why, and what are some of the proofs such as hadiths, sunna, quranic verses?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah,

The relied upon position is that such music is not permitted.
