RE: Is it bad to give old clothes in charity?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Asalaam alaikum

some info’ on how charities use clothing and other items donated to them. (I know this since I know charities that do this, Muslim Hands, Islamic Relief etc.)

1. If donated items (clothing/footwear) are donated and are of ‘decent’ quality i.e. ok to wear for the destination country, then they are sent to the people in need

2. If the donated items are decent quality but the country in need require other relief i.e. food, clean water etc then the items are sold to charity shops, 2nd hand shops and the like.

3. If the donated items are poor quality and clothing is culturally different for the needy people of the destination country then it is sold to ‘rag traders’. rag traders’ sell to textile industry, who shred the clothing into raw material which can then be used as ‘padding’ in bed mattresses etc.

Therefore even if the clothing you have is of poor quality, please give it to charity, since they can make money from it.

Not just clothing but rags, curtains etc also.

Revenue (for charities) has become so much that nowadays (in the UK) there are big storage containers outside at least one mosque in all areas for this purpose.
