Question

Allah SWT has blessed us with a baby boy. We named him Samiul Mubashir Islam. Is this ok? we have been told by a person that he should be named Abdus Samiul Mubashir Islam. She suggested that Abdus should be added before Samiul. I would be grateful for your valuable opinion.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Sami ul Mubaashir means the one who listens to the bringer of good news. It is better to give names like Abdullah and Abdul Rahman or Mohammed or any sahaba names. The name is the best gift which parents can give and the names.

It is reported from Abu Wahb, a companion, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Name yourselves with the names of the Prophets. The names which Allah Almighty loves most are ‘Abdullah and ‘Abdur-Rahman. The most truthful names are Harith and Humam. The ugliest names are Harb and Murra.”[i]

Names given to the child should be good and meaningful. On the Day of Judgement, people will be called by their names and the name of the fathers. Therefore, a good name must be chosen. [ii] Sunan Abi Dawuud p.676 v.2

Only Allah knows best.
