Are Dog and Swine Hides Considered Filthy Even after Tanning?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

Is it permissible to wear clothes made of pigskin or dog (canine) leather? Is it allowed to sell clothes or articles made of dogs or pigs? Is it allowed to pray with clothes made of dog or pork in the Shafi’i school?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

In the Shafi’i school, dogs, pigs, and their offspring are considered major filth. The hides of dogs or swine cannot be purified by tanning. [Keller, Reliance of the Traveler]

In summary, it is not permissible to wear in prayer, or outside of the prayer, any article of clothing made from dogs or pigs. It is likewise not permissible to sell such items because they are considered filth.
