I think this question has been answered before. It is important to consider the harms which come into existence due to this action. The worldly harm is that it has an effect on one’s health and may eventually affect one’s ability to perform properly with his wife. Also, according to some medical experts this type of activity leads to pain in the back and joints and dizziness and loss in memory. The harm/loss in the next world is that on the Day of Judgment the hand will become pregnant which will cause him to become disgraced in front of many people; and because this is not permissible and is a sin, he will have to be punished for this action in the life here after. Thus, it is imperative to remind oneself of the worldly and next worldly losses of such action. The scholars recommend some steps which can help us stop being involved in this action; not to stay alone and to take showers in the morning and evening because when someone is clean he will be more apt to stay away from bad thoughts. He should also stay away from anything which will increase the sexual urges. For example: magazines, novels, web sites, or discussions of this these types which encourage those desires in an individual. He should also try to stay involved in those activities which encourage piety and cleanliness and purity. For example: reading verses from the Quran and sayings of the messenger of Allah, and duas etc. There is also a dua which he should say after every prayer. Allahumma La Takilni ila nafsee tarfata ainin, fa innaka in takilni ilaa nafsee takilni ilaa dowfin wa auwratin wa zambin wa khateeatin.
