Question:

Is it sinful for one to be continuing to recite the Quran or engaging in Dhikr whilst Adhan is being performed?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

It is mustahab to respond to the Adhan and by doing so holds a great reward. The Prophet of Allah (pbuh) mentioned in a Hadith that, “Whoever repeats the words of the Muadhin with conviction will enter Paradise.” (Sahih Muslim pg:167 v:1)

Regarding your question, if one is reciting the Quran and the muadhin calls the adhan, it is mustahab i.e. preferable to close the Quran and reply to the adhan. However, if he continues reciting the Quran, there is no sin in it. (Raddul Muhtar pg:65-66 v:2)

Only Allah knows best.
