Question:

A jamaat saathi was today encouraging everyone to act upon the Hadith, as it was raining heavily outside.

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Jibraeel taught me a medicine which obviates the need for any other medicine or for a physician.”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr, Hadhrat Umar, Hadhrat Uthmaan, and Hadhrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhum) eagerly asked: “And, what is that medicine? We are in need of it.”  Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:

“Take some rainwater and recite on it Surah Faatihah, Surah Ikhlaas, Surah Falaq, Surah Naas and Aayatul Kursi. Each one seventy times (and blow on the water). Then drink of this water morning and evening for seven days.

I take an oath by That Being Who has sent me as the Nabi with the Haqq! Jibraeel said to me: ‘Verily, whoever drinks from this water Allah will eliminate from his body every disease and protect him against all sicknesses and pains. Whoever gives it to his wife to drink, then sleeps with her, she will become pregnant by the permission of Allah. It cures  the eyes, eliminates sihr (magic), cures chest pains, toothache, and urine stoppage.”

A respected brother said this Hadith cannot be acted upon because according to Al Dahabi and Ibn Hajr, this Hadith has no chain. The source of the Hadith is Imaam Razeen Al-Abderi in his book Tajreedus Sihaah. The brother was rebuked and released from the Jamaat.

What is the correct position? Can this Hadith be acted upon and considered Sunnah?

Answer:

In Imam Az-Zhababi’s book ‘The Lives of the Noble Scholars’, he writes that Imam Razeen is ‘الإمام المحدث الشهير’ that he is the Imam who is well known and a muhaddith. Furthermore, he does not say that this hadith has no chain, rather he makes the general statement ‘He narrated some unreliable additions in it, and if he had left them out from it, he would have done well.’ [1]

In the book mentioned – Tajreedus Sihaah, Imam Razeen states that he has compiled the book from the six well-known books of Hadith. Imam Razeen is a well-known muhaddith and scholar. Although Az-Zhahabi claims that he has some unreliable chains of narration in his book, no one has ever accused Imam Razeen of being a mudallis- somebody who falsifies Hadith. Therefore, we can assume that at the very least, the Hadith mentioned in Tajreedus Sihaah are not fabricated, although some of them may be weak or taken from other sources.

Although weak Hadith cannot be acted upon in matters of belief and ruling, they may be acted upon in taking virtues or performing good deeds.

Only Allah Ta’ala knows best.
