Eating food with weevils in it

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by TheMufti.com

Q. Assalaamwaalaikum. I recently made Chutney with dried green chillies. I didn’t see any weevils in the red chillies when I made the Chutney but later when I checked the packet I saw some weevils. I don’t know if any got grounded into the chutney. Is it permissible to eat the chutney or do I have to throw it out? I only used 7 dry red chillies over a litre of chutney. Jazakallah khair

A. As a general rule, it is not permissible to consume insects or food, which have insects in it. The same would apply to eating food, which have weevils in it.

In the enquired case, it would be permissible to eat the chutney, as there was no certainty that weevils were in it at the time.
