Passing Appreciative Comments On Something Which Is Haraam

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Question:  Asalamu Alaikum!!! Is passing of appreciating comments on haram things causes a person to lose his faith as it is very much common now a days among Muslims. For example. They say about a movie that it is really fantastic or when they listen songs they say it is really good. (They say  that  it is good and nice not halal and permissible because they know its haaram). What will be the ruling on the Muslims who pass these types of comments?

Answer: Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

That which is known to be Haraam means that these are condemned in Islam, and are totally against the teachings of Allah and His Messenger. As a Muslim who truly believes in Allah and His Messenger, he cannot find pleasure and be happy with such things. It is against the requirements of Imaan that a Muslim can find Haraam things pleasurable and appreciate such. Hating and detesting that which is sinful and Haraam is a requirement of one’s Imaan and must be the conduct of a Muslim.

In this regard, while speaking about the true believers, the Quran says, ‘But Allah Has made Imaan (faith) beloved to you and has beautified it in your hearts, and Has made Kufr (disbelief) transgression and sins hateful to you. Such are those who are rightly guided. (Sura Al Hujurat (49) Verse 7).

This verse shows that a true believer is one to whom Imaan is beloved, and its beauty and love is found in his heart. On account of his true faith and love for Imaan/Islam, he hates every type of Kufr, transgression and sin. Hence, he can never tolerate, accept, appreciate and find pleasure, joy and happiness in Haraam things.
It is for this reason, the Prophet ﷺ used to recite frequently and also taught his followers the following Dua:

“Allahumma Habib Ilainal Imaan Wa Zayyinhu Fi Quloobina, Wa Karrih Ilainal Kufr Wal Fusuqa Wal Isyan”

Translation: ‘O Allah, make Imaan beloved to us and beautify it in our hearts. And make Kufr (disbelief, transgression and sins hateful to us.’

Hence, one must not pass appreciative comments on Haraam things. If one does so, it will not cause him to lose his faith, but it will be sinful.

And Allah Knows Best.
