Question:

I have a job offer from an American company which mainly deals with oil and gas and petroleum sector around the world (more than 95 % of its business). But I also came to know that about 2 to 3 percent of this company’s business is by selling equipment to naval forces of western countries. I will not be related to this work and my work will be only in Saudi Arabia. I will working in the division that only deals with oil gas and petroleum companies and sells only oilfield equipment. Can I join this company.

Answer:

Bismillah

Abdullah ibn Masood Description: raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)said: “Seeking of halal earnings is compulsory after the obligatory duties.” (Shuabul Iman lilBaihaqi Hadith 8213)

Two conditions needs to be found to determine if the work is lawful or not;

  1. The nature of the work is lawful
  2. More than 50% of the income is halal.

Bearing all this in mind and taking into consideration your question we can conclude that working for such companies would entail earning more than 50% halal since you will be selling products that are Halal to sell. However, you should still make effort to look for a job which does not involve anything doubtful at all in any way. In the meantime, to keep this would be permissible.
