Washing the mouth in ghusl when one has a blocked nose

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

Washing the inside of the nose and mouth is an obligatory element of the ritual bath (ghusl). One must ensure that one washes the inside of the nose upto the beginning of the bone. This is not difficult and may be done through sniffing, tilting the head back or merely inserting one’s fingers to guide the inserted water around the nostril. Dried mucus must be removed as it prevents water reaching the skin; wet mucus does not.

The mouth must be washed up to the extent that is normally considered one’s mouth. Whatever is beyond that upto the top of the throat is not necessary to wash but is recommend. What is normally considered the mouth is that amount reached by the water when one fills one’s mouth with water and moves it around.
