Breaking Fast through Masturbation

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I wish to inquire as to the expiation for breaking of ones fast through means of masturbation. I understand the grave sin involved in the act committed. I have felt extremely guilty ever since committing the sin, and cotinually make due to Allah to forgive me for my act and help me to avoid it. I am still very weak spiritually, and have failed to control my urges, and broken my fast again in the same manner. On one occassion, I found myself with a girl and she used her hand to provide me with relief. What is the method for me to perform my expiation or Kaffarah?

Do you also have any advice on how to stay away from such acts. I am finding myself in a extremely dire situation as I strongly wish to quit these habits and find myself on a stronger path of deen. I wish to strengthen my bond with Allah, but am finding it difficult to control my urges. I fear that Allah will not accept my efforts and that as long as I am unable to control myself, I will not reap the true beauty of deen. I also wish to complete my hifz and have completed 2 and a half paras, but feel that often my salaah, my hifz, duaa and other forms of ibadaah are lacking in strong connection with Allah and hence not providing me with the true benefits that can be obtained. Any advice would be greatly appreciated in helping me to quit my bad habits, and finiding a stronger bond with Allah and the sweetness of deen?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1)    We take note of the contents of your mail.

Consider the following Ahadith:

صحيح مسلم (4/ 2106)

«والذي نفسي بيده لو لم تذنبوا لذهب الله بكم، ولجاء بقوم يذنبون، فيستغفرون الله فيغفر لهم»

Translation: By the One in Whose Hand my soul is! If you do not commit sins, Allah would replace you with a people who would commit sins and seek forgiveness from Allah; and Allah will certainly forgive them. (Saheeh Muslim 4/2106)

سنن ابن ماجه (2/ 1420)

كل بني آدم خطاء، وخير الخطائين التوابون

Translation: All the sons of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent. (Sunan Ibn Majah 2/1420)

It is the innate nature of man to sin. As humans, Allah has created desires within us, and by abstaining from fulfilling these desires we get closer to Allah Y. This is the test which Allah has put us in. Therefore, Allah  opened the doors of Tawbah for us, so that after sinning, we repent, and turn to Allah, whilst accepting that we are weak and we will fall into temptations, and it is only by the Tawfeeq granted by Allah Y that we can abstain from pursuing our desires. When a person repents after sinning, this indeed catapults the love of Allah in a person’s heart, thus making the person closer to Allah. Allama Tibi Rahmatullahi Alayh mentions that “[those who think that a person cannot sin, and that it is not in man’s nature to sin] have not understood the secret to sinning that it begets Tawbah, and it engenders the love of Allah into a person’s heart.[i]

There are three conditions for the acceptance of Tawbah:

1)      Leaving the sin

2)      Having regret for the sin

3)      Making a firm intention not to commit the sin again.[ii]

You should make an effort to avoid all sins and masturbation in particular, and take all steps that are necessary to stop sinning. Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi Rahmatullahi Alayh states: “Allah has informed us about the treatment of every illness. The use of the treatment requires willpower.”[iii] In another place he explains: “In order to act [on the guidelines to stay away from fulfilling one’s desires], willpower is required even though one may find it difficult and one will have to force oneself to act. For example, in order to gain academic excellence, a student will have to make an effort through studying, lectures and discussing the lessons. If such a student was to wait to attain strength and willpower to study, and in the meantime not study, then such a student will be deprived. Therefore, the person [who is trying to stop falling for his desires] will have to force himself to act (use his willpower and leave his desires). If he was to doubt this, then that means that the person does not want to act (leave his sins).”[iv]

We advise you to identify an Ahlullah (pious servant of Allah) as your spiritual guide to assist you in uplifting your spirituality and dealing with the issues of your nafs. In the meantime, you may listen to the discourses of Qaseeda Burda by Hazrat Mufti Ebrahim Desai (Daamat Barakatuhum) which also address the issue of reformation of the Nafs.

You may also refer to Fatwa #28159, 26717 and 19499 which are guidelines on how to avoid masturbation.

2)    In principle, if a person ejaculates through masturbation whilst fasting, then that will necessitate Qadha.[v]
