Our Nabi’s (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) ability to see behind him

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Is it true that Nabi Muhammad‎ (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) could see everything both front and back at the same time without turning?

Answer

Yes.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘… by Allah your concentration in the salah and your [method of] ruku’ are not hidden from me. I am indeed able to see you from behind my back.’

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 418)

This is one of several Hadiths on this topic.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) writes;

‘The apparent meaning of this Hadith shows that this was a condition specific to salah. However, it is possible that it was a perpetual ability of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) as is reported from [the Tabi’i] Imam Mujahid (rahimahullah).

Imam Baqiy ibn Makhlad (rahimahullah)  mentioned that Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) could see in the dark just like he could see in the light.’

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 419. Also see Ghayatus Sul of Ibnul Mulaqqin, pg.299)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
