Virtue of an old aged Muslim

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I have heard people stating:

“Allah is shy to question a servant whose beard is white/grey regarding their sins.”

Please provide the reference for this being an authentic Hadith.

Answer

This Hadith is recorded by Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) in Al-Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 5282.

The chain of narrators is good.

(See: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol.10 pg.149 and Kashful Khafa, Hadith: 742)

Note: The word used in the Hadith does literally translate as ‘to be shy’

However, it should be understood to mean: Allah does not refuse…

The full version of the Hadith is as follows:

Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘Indeed Allah Ta’ala is bashful for a muslim who has white hair and is upright, adhering to the sunnah, that when he asks from Allah, He is not refused.’
