What Can I Do To Make Up for the Fact That I Can’t Marry?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

Due to some terrible times when I was younger, I don’t really have the emotional ability to ever get married. Alhamdulillah, lust is not an issue either for me. But marriage is an emphasized sunna, and I do not want to lose the immense reward it may bring. What can I do?

Answer

Thank you for your question. May Allah compensate you for your pain and may He open doors for you to many kinds of goodness.

Other Praiseworthy Deeds

If you are not able to marry and lust is not a problem, then there are a slew of things that you can do to help this ummah. Some of the things that come to mind are:

  • Caring for an orphan, or the elderly, physically or financially
  • Educating yourself to work in a field where Muslims are needed
  • Volunteering or participating in humanitarian efforts
  • Helping Muslim organizations
  • Gaining Sacred knowledge (Quran, fiqh) in order to spread it among Muslims
  • Serving your parents
  • Teaching the children around you, among family, friends, or at schools,

and the list goes on.
