Must I Adopt My Husband’s Children When He Still Has Not Divorced Their Mother?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Is it obligatory for me to adopt my husband’s children as mine when he is yet to divorce their mother?

Assalamu alaykum,

Thank you for your question. It is not obligatory for you to adopt the children from your husband’s previous marriage. You will find all the details here:

Please don’t have any surprises in your marriage and discuss the matter with him. Although it is not obligatory to take them in and care for them, it might help you bond with your husband better, and it certainly would afford him more time to spend at home with you, instead of always leaving to go and see them. It would be easier on his finances as well. Pray istikhara and consult those around you before you make this decision.

May Allah give you the best of this world and the next.
