A comprehensive book of supplications

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Amjad Rasheed

Is there a comprehensive book of supplications which contains du`as that have been authenticated and approved by leading Shafi`i scholars? If so, what is it called and is it permissible to use any book of du`as?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

The best book that the questioner can be guided to is the book of “Al-Adhkar” by Imam al-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him. It compiles authentic supplications that have come from the Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, in all situations. The questioner should look for it and fulfill his needs with it.

It is permissible to read any book that compiles du`as, as long as the du`a does not contain anything prohibited, such as descriptions of Allah, Most High, which are inappropriate, or du`as that contain something that is prohibited to supplicate for, such as asking for transgression or cutting of familial relations or something else of the like.

It is more precautionary for the common man, who cannot tell the difference between truth and falsehood to not delve into reading a book without having it reviewed by a trusted person of knowledge who can guide him in the matter. If he is unable to find someone to guide him, then let him restrict himself to the books of famous scholars, such as the one that I mentioned, which is the book of “al-Adhkar”.

And Allah alone gives success.
