Which uni and What subjects?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Tafseer Raheemi

Question: Which subjects should i study at uni and how should i choose a uni.

Answer: It is good that you have given a lot of thought towards what you want to do, and are already looking towards living a life of halal income.

Sheikh zarnouji in his book on getting a good education, called taleem al mutallim, quotes a teacher telling his student, “When you go to Bukhara ( to study), then don’t rush…spend two months there, until you have had time to consider your options, and then choose who to study under… Choose your teachers, and your subject, and stick with them.”

Obviously, nowadays methods have changed and the modern equivalent is to look at university prospectuses, research on the Internet, and ask students who are already at or have recently graduated from your prospective universities, to decide which university is the best one to go to.

As for your chosen professions, you could go into any one of them, but just choose good, benefitting options within them.

Accounting is good, as you are just number crunching.

Becoming a teacher or a university lecturer is also good. Chemistry, biology are also good subjects. Becoming a lawyer with the intention of helping the community is also very good.

If you choose politics, you would become an MP and would thus be working on behalf of your constituency. You would be helping looking after the welfare of large sections of the population, and this would be a great source of reward for you.

As for investment banking, there is obviously a taboo surrounding it because banks are inextricably linked to interest. However, there are many new Islamic banks opening up, and you could apply to work for them as an investment banker and help these startups to grow.

May Allah make you successful in your chosen profession.

As for your stay at university. Make sure you have good friends and good study partners. Work hard during your stay and strive to be the best at what you do. Do not forget your Islamic obligations, and keep up with your prayers, fasting etc.

You will undoubtedly have a lot of free time at university. Utilise it well. Join some good Islamic groups and increase your knowledge. If you are unable to get access to some good Islamic groups, enrol on some online courses like shariahprogram.ca, darululum.org or , ealim.org.
