Will wudhu get invalid after smoking

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org
Can you please tell me that if the wudhu becomes invalid after smoking cigarette and also please tell me is smoking haraam in ISLAM or not. If it is haraam please give evidence.
Wudu does not break by smoking. Even though it causes bad breath, we have been ordered to rectify that situation by rinsing our mouths. Tobacco is not haram. The active ingredient in cigarettes that is questionable is tobacco, which has decreed as makrooh. Most scholars do not declare it as haram.
There are two ways to use tobacco: One way is to use it in its actual form in Paan or something else. The other is in the form of cigarettes. The scholars say that cigarettes are not amongst the signs of pious people, while we find references in some hadiths where we have ordered to stay within the habits of the pious people and try to emulate them. That’s why tobacco is makrooh, but there is no permission for cigarettes because tobacco is amongst the non pious and the pious. I.e. tobacco is not amongst those special habits which are of non pious people; that’s why there is some leniency amongst some of the scholars.
