People of Book

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org
Please answer this question as this will answer many of us like me. Is there any Hadith that says it allowed to eat a animal which is killed (cut throat not slaughter) by the people of the book. I have seen many brothers eating from local restaurants saying bismillah since it is been cut by people of the book. if so we can stop spending lot of money on the halal meet? please give me the result on the basis of Hadith
To eat meat of an animal there are many pre-conditions in islam, one of which is that at the time of slaughter one should recite ‘bismillahi allahu akbar’. The people of the book in our times don’t comply with all the regulations mentioned in quran regarding the process of slaughtering an animal; hence, their slaughter cannot be in accordance with the Islamic law. Therefore, its consumption would be impermissible. Slaughtering an animal by the people of the book is one of the requirements of the Islamic law but there are many other necessary conditions for an animal to be considered kosher in Islamic law which are not met. Therefore, animals slaughtered by the people of the book are haram.
