Fasting during pregnancy and nursing

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum,

My wife is pregnant and she is due some time by the end of Ramadan. Is she allowed to fast in the month of Ramadan? If she misses the fasting, can she make it up while she is nursing the baby?

Jazakallah

A pregnant woman may leave fasting if there is suspicion of harm to herself or the baby, however, it’s necessary to perform qadha for the missed fasts afterwards.

If she has the capability to fast while nursing then she should fast, however, if there is a possibility of issues with nursing while fasting or of harm to the baby, then she should not fast and perform qadha afterwards.
