Can One Perform Hajj on Behalf of Others?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: Can we do hajj or ummrah for our relatives who didnt perform hajj or umrah so far. if we can how about the rewards for them?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

[1] If Hajj is obligatory upon a person, and they are unable to go due to some genuine excuse such as becoming very elderly [and unable to perform the rites], or afflicted by a chronic illness that they are unlikely to recover from such as paralysis, or other such excuses, then it would be obligatory for them to send somebody to perform the Hajj on their behalf. [see: Can a Man Perform Hajj on Behalf of a Non-Mahram Woman? and: Appointing Someone to Perform Hajj on Someone’s Behalf ]

[2] As for donating the reward to the living or the dead, this is permitted by the vast majority of scholars. Hence you can perform the Hajj and donate the reward to one or more relatives, or even the entire believing community (umma) if you so wish. [see: Donating Reward to the Dead: A Detailed Answer]
