When Can Someone Pray Sitting in a Car?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: Under which circumstances is it permissible in the Hanafi school to pray sitting down? Can one pray sitting down when one is traveling in a vehicle?

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I pray that you are well, insha’Allah.

It is permitted to pray voluntary (nafl) prayers whilst sitting in your seat [of a vehicle] if you are outside the city limits. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

As for obligatory prayers, it is not permitted to pray them whilst seated without genuine excuse. Please see: The Fiqh of Praying Sitting Down and: Can One Pray Sitting Down or In the Car Due to Fear of Harm?

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam
